Ms. Abby Waldman

Principal

B.A., Brandeis University; M.Ed., University of Nevada, Las Vegas
Abby Waldman joined Brooke in 2008 as a second grade teacher at Brooke Roslindale. Ms. Waldman then taught fourth grade and served as an assistant principal. She became the principal of Brooke Mattapan in 2015. Before coming to Brooke, Ms. Waldman taught third grade through Teach for America in Las Vegas.

Dr. Melissa Oyer

Assistant Principal

B.A., Duke University; M.Ed. and Ph.D., Temple University
Melissa Oyer joined Brooke in 2017 as the School Psychologist at Brooke Mattapan. Dr. Oyer is currently the Assistant Principal for Student Support at Brooke Mattapan. Before coming to Brooke, Dr. Oyer was the School Psychologist and Director of Individualized Student Services at the Charter High School for Architecture + Design in Philadelphia, PA.

Ms. Courtney Swartz

Assistant Principal

B.S., Ithaca College; M.A.T., American University 
Courtney Swartz joined Brooke in 2012 as a sixth grade English language arts teacher at Brooke Mattapan. Since then, Ms. Swartz has taught fifth grade at Brooke Mattapan. Ms. Swartz is currently serving as the Assistant Principal of Upper Elementary at Brooke Mattapan. Before coming to Brooke, Ms. Swartz was a Dean of Curriculum and Instruction at UP Academy Holland, taught 4th grade at Galapagos Charter School and UNO Charter School in Chicago, and 3rd grade at Parkview Elementary School in Washington, DC.

Ms. Danya Wallace

Assistant Principal

B.A., Canterbury Christ Church University; M.A., Goldsmiths University of London; M.Sc., Touro College.
Ms. Wallace has worked in the field of youth work and education for the past eighteen years. She has worked extensively on social change in education across London, England, where she worked as an Inclusions Officer in secondary schools, a Social Studies teacher, and a Youth and Community Worker in the borough of Greenwich. A special highlight of her teaching vocation so far has been teaching Mathematics and English in Botswana and South Africa. Ms. Wallace recently taught third grade in the Bronx, New York, for three years. She holds a B.A. in Education, an M.A. in Creative Writing and an M.Sc. in Early Childhood Education and Special Education. Prior to becoming an assistant principal, Ms. Wallace taught sixth grade English language arts and social studies at Brooke Mattapan.

Ms. Theresa Walsh

Assistant Principal

B.A./B.S., Syracuse University; M.A.T, American University
Ms. Walsh is ecstatic to work with families and scholars in the Brooke Mattapan community. She began teaching through Teach For America in Washington, D.C. and then moved to New York City. She helped found an elementary school there and after serving as grade team leader, she became Democracy Prep Harlem Elementary School's principal, a position she held proudly for three years. She taught as a fifth grade teacher before becoming an assistant principal.

Mr. Berthoniel Francois

Dean of Students

B.A., Andrews University
Mr. Francois Graduated from Andrews University in 2012. While there he studied Social Work in hopes to one day work with children. After graduating Mr. Francois felt impressed to transition into teaching. He started working with kindergarten aged children, Elementary Special Education, and 6th grade history in a span of 5 years. Mr. Francois has a passion for student achievement and character development and is excited to continue that work here at Brooke Mattapan.

Ms. Allyson Taylor

Director of Operations

B.A., University of California Los Angeles; M.A., Harvard University
Allyson Taylor joined Brooke in 2018, as the Director of Operations at Brooke Mattapan. Before coming to Brooke, Ms. Taylor graduated with her Masters in Education Policy and taught 3rd grade at a charter school in New York City.

Ms. Katherine Nethercote

School Psychologist

M.A., Ed.S., University of Delaware; B.A., Northeastern University
Mrs. Nethercote received her B.A. in political science from Northeastern University and her M.A. and Ed.S. degrees in school psychology from the University of Delaware. Before joining Brooke, she worked as a school psychologist in northern Virginia.

Ms. Stephanie Lopez

School Nurse

Prior to Brooke, Ms. Lopez was a staff nurse at Boston Children's Hospital the past 4 years and at Beth Israel Urgent Care. Prior to nursing she worked as a Medical Assistant for 8 years, primarily with the pediatric population. She loves working with children and it has been a personal goal to work in community nursing.

Ms. Shemere Johnson

Associate Dean of Students

Shemere Johnson joined Brooke in 2019 as the Associate Dean of Students at Brooke Mattapan. Previously, Shemere worked for Boston Prep in their Support Services department for two years.

Ms. Emma Blackney

Kindergarten Teacher

B.A., Boston College
Emma Blackney joined Brooke in 2018, as a Kindergarten Teacher on the Brooke Mattapan team. Before coming to Brooke, Ms. Blackney taught two years of Kindergarten at a charter school in New York City.

Ms. Laura Crowe

Kindergarten Teacher

B.A., Union College; M.Ed. Boston University
Laura Crowe joined Brooke in 2019 as a Kindergarten Teacher at Brooke Mattapan. Before coming to Brooke, Ms. Crowe worked at UP Academy Dorchester where she taught 1st Grade and English as a Second Language for the past 5 years. Ms. Crowe served with City Year Boston and Teach for America prior to and during her time at UP Dorchester.

Ms. Gabrielle Holme-Miller

Kindergarten Teacher

B.A., Kalamazoo College
Ms. Holme-Miller graduated from Kalamazoo College with a Bachelor's degree in English and French Language & Literature. She began her work as a educator in her hometown of Amherst, Massachusetts interning with the integrated arts program at Wildwood Elementary School and then working at the Summer of Power program for high school English Language Learners in Holyoke. Ms. Holme-Miller is delighted to be joining the Brooke Mattapan Team.

Ms. Chandler Pearson

Prior to Brooke, Ms. Pearson attended Williams College where she majored in psychology. She spent her college summers working for various education non-profits including Building Educated Leaders for Life (BELL), Middle Grades Partnership (MGP), and Generation Teach.

Ms. Brinn graduated from Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA in May of 2016 with a BS in Early Childhood Education. She did her student teaching semester at a local school in a second grade classroom. Ms. Brinn is very excited to teach first grade at Brooke Mattapan!

Ms. Emily Doherty

First Grade Teacher

Emily Doherty joined Brooke in 2017, as a First Grade Teacher at Brooke Mattapan. Ms. Doherty is currently serving as a Mentor Teacher in First Grade. Before coming to Brooke, Ms. Doherty taught Kindergarten for four years with Uncommon Schools in Brooklyn, NY.

Ms. Heather Flaherty

First Grade Teacher

B.A., Georgetown University; M.Ed., Relay Graduate School of Education
Heather Flaherty joined Brooke in 2018 as a 1st Grade Teacher. Before coming to Brooke, Ms. Flaherty served as a 2014 Teach for America Corps Member in the South Bronx, a Fulbright Teaching Scholar in Barranquilla, Colombia, and a 3rd grade teacher in Brooklyn, New York.

Ms. Katie Lee

First Grade Teacher

Ms. Lee began her teaching career in New York City as a first grade teacher and Teach for America corps member. She then taught Kindergarten, first grade and served as a student support teacher at Brooke Roslindale. Since that time, Ms. Lee has worked as a student support coordinator, instructional coach and special education teacher within other district and charter schools here in Boston.  Last year, Ms. Lee returned to Brooke Mattapan as a 4th grade math teacher. Ms. Lee is very excited to join the first grade team!

Second Grade Teacher

Ms. Mejia was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts. In 2012, she graduated from Stonehill College with a double major in Criminology and Sociolgy. Shortly after graduating, Ms. Mejia became employed by the Plymouth County District Attorney’s office with a role as a Victim/Witness Advocate for District and Superior Courts. Ms. Mejia remained in this role for 2 years while pursuing her Masters degree in Social Work from Wheelock College. With a primary focus on children, Ms. Mejia gained unique hands-on experiences while interning for organizations like the Boys and Girls Club and Big Sister, Big Brother. Following her graduation from Wheelock College in 2015, Ms. Mejia worked as an ongoing social worker for the Department of Children and Families for a year before transitioning into Brooke for her role as an Associate Teacher. For this upcoming year, Ms. Mejia is excited to continue her work as an Associate Teacher!

Jennie Brown joined Brooke in 2017 as the 3-5 grade Science Teacher at Brooke Mattapan. Before coming to Brooke, Ms. Brown taught in Cambridge and Oakland. She also taught youth science programming at Chabot Space & Science Center in Oakland, California, the Springfield Museums, and the Museum of Science, Boston.

Ms. Kathryn Dircks

Kathryn Dircks joined Brooke in 2019 as a third grade teacher at Brooke Mattapan. Before coming to Brooke, Ms. Dircks taught 6th grade in Baltimore City, Maryland for six years.

Ms. Alexandra Falconieri

Third Grade Teacher

M.Ed., Molloy College
After graduating from Molloy College in 2016 with her master's degree, Ms. Falconieri began her teaching career at Success Academy Union Square in New York. She has taught Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade. She is excited to start this new chapter in Massachusetts teaching 3rd grade at Brooke Mattapan.

Ms. Lilla Norris

Third Grade Teacher

Ms. Norris graduated from Birmingham-Southern College with a BA in history. After working in marketing and development at a science museum for two years, she earned a masters degree in early childhood and elementary education. She has taught both 1st and 3rd grade in Birmingham City Schools in Alabama. Ms. Norris is so excited to join the Brooke Mattapan team.

Ms. Sarah Riley

Fourth Grade Teacher

Sarah Riley joined Brooke Charter Schools in 2019 as a fourth grade teacher at Brooke Mattapan. Before coming to Brooke, Ms. Riley taught third grade in Raleigh, North Carolina and worked as a curriculum developer for the Positivity Project.

Ms. Ariel Smolik-Valles

Fourth Grade Teacher

B.A., Harvard University
Ariel Smolik-Valles joined Brooke Mattapan in 2017 as an Associate Teacher for first grade. Since then, Ms. Valles has been teaching fourth grade and is currently teaching fourth grade. Before coming to Brooke, Ms. Valles completed her undergraduate degree at Harvard College.

Ms. Katherine Stevenson

Fourth Grade Teacher

B.A., Cedar Crest College
Ms. Stevenson graduated from Cedar Crest College in Allentown, PA with a degree in Elementary Education and Dance. She earned a TEFL (Teaching English as Foreign Language) certificate and began her teaching career abroad in Thailand where she taught English Language, Math and Science for one year. Ms. Stevenson continued her teaching career as a 2nd grade teacher at Molly Stark Elementary in Bennington, Vermont for five years. She is looking forward to a successful school year as a member of the 4th grade team.

Ms. Emily Corbett

Emily Corbett joined the Brooke team in 2019 as a 5th grade teacher at Brooke Mattapan. Before coming to Brooke, she taught 7th grade math at Up Academy Boston for one year, 7th grade science at Roxbury Prep Lucy Stone for four years, and 7th grade science for two years in North Carolina through Teach for America.

Mr. Kevin Kaufman

Kevin Kaufman joined Brooke in 2017 as a Fifth Grade Teacher at Brooke Mattapan. Before coming to Brooke, Mr. Kaufman spent three years teaching fourth grade at Uncommon Schools in Brooklyn, New York.

Ms. Rachel Shack

Fifth Grade Teacher

B.A., Duke University; J.D. University of Pennsylvania
Rachel Shack joined Brooke Mattapan in 2018 as a 5th Grade Teacher. Before coming to Brooke, Rachel was an attorney in the Boston office of WilmerHale and, before law school, she taught lower elementary in Greater New Orleans and served as a Recruitment Director at Teach For America.

Ms. Marilyn Akinrinlola

Sixth Grade English Language Arts and Social Studies Teacher

B.S., Miami University of Ohio
Ms. Akinrinlola was born and raised on the south side of Providence, Rhode Island. I attended undergrad at Miami University of Ohio and earned my B.S in social work with a minor in social justice studies. After graduating college, she moved to South Korea to teach English for 1.5 years. Immediately upon returning stateside, she joined Teach For America to pursue a passion for closing the achievement gap and working with low income students similar to herself. She is currently working to earn my masters degree in education at Boston University.

Ms. Shanera Brodie

Shanera Brodie joined Brooke Mattapan in 2017 as a middle school Associate Teacher. After her AT year, Shanera transitioned to lead teacher and is currently in her second year of teaching sixth grade English Language Arts and social studies. Shanera is a Boston native and proud Brooke alumna and is thrilled to be back in the Brooke community working with our wonderful Brooke scholars!

Annie Gaburo joined Brooke in 2019 as a sixth grade english language arts teacher at Brooke Mattapan. Prior to joining Brooke, Ms. Gaburo taught sixth grade ELA at Boston Prep.

Ms. Veronica Gentile

Veronica Gentile joined Brooke in 2017 as a 6th grade math and science teacher at the Brooke Mattapan campus. Before coming to Brooke, Ms. Gentile taught 6th grade math and science for five years at Boston Prep, and worked for four years in a variety of roles at Match Charter School.

Ms. Dareon Stacker

Sixth Grade Math and Science Teacher

Dareon Stacker joined Brooke as an Associate Teacher in 2015. Since then, she taught sixth grade Math and Science at the Brooke's Roslindale campus. She is currently a 6th grade Math and Science at Brooke's Mattapan campus. Before coming to Brooke, she completed a successful year with the Dudley Promise Corps.

Kayla Armando joined Brooke in 2018 as a seventh grade ELA & Social Studies teacher at Brooke Mattapan. Before coming to Brooke, Ms.Armando taught history and ELA for five years at Uncommon Schools in New York and Boston.

Adam Dobberfuhl joined Brooke in 2017 as a 7th grade math and science teacher at the Mattapan Campus. Before coming to Brooke, Adam had more than 10 years of science teaching and administrative experience at Boston Prep.

Mr. John Ellis

Seventh Grade Math and Science Teacher

B.A., The College of William and Mary
After graduating from The College of William & Mary with an Economics degree in 2013, Mr. Ellis moved to New Orleans. In New Orleans he taught 7th and 8th grade math for a total of 5 years. Originally from the Boston area, Mr. Ellis is very excited to be returning home to join the Brooke Mattapan team!

Polly Furth joined Brooke in 2017 as a 7th-grade ELA teacher at Brooke Mattapan. Before coming to Brooke, Ms. Furth had seven years of teaching experience at the elementary and high school level in Indonesia, Washington, D.C., and Denver, CO.

Ms. Andrea King

Sixth Grade Math and Science Teacher

Ms. King is an Associate Teacher for middle school students. She graduated from UMass Amherst in 2017 with a degree in Psychological and Brain Sciences. Ms. King started her career in education by working to improve the math skills, attendance, and social-emotional skills of high school students with City Year!

Mr. Sean McKenna

Sean McKenna joined Brooke in 2017 as a fourth grade teacher in Mattapan. Mr. Mckenna is currently serving as a seventh grade ELA and history teacher. Before coming to Brooke, Mr. McKenna taught seventh grade in Lowell, MA.

Ms. Digna Pena Cintron

Spanish Teacher, Co-Curricular Department Chair

Ms. Peña-Cintron is returning to the Brooke Mattapan team as a Spanish teacher. Prior to Brooke, Ms. Peña-Cintron taught sixth-eighth grade Spanish in rural Mississippi, as a 2013 Teach For America Corps member.

Ms. Camila Alvahydo

Spanish Teacher

B.A., University of Georgia; M.A., University of Georgia
Ms. Alvahydo joined Brooke as Spanish teacher in 2016. She has over ten years of experience teaching Spanish, Portuguese, and French. Prior to joining Brooke, Ms. Alvahydo was a lecturer at the University of Georgia, the University of South Carolina, Middlebury College, Georgia State University, Bridgewater State University and, most recently, at Simmons College. She is excited to return to the Brooke Mattapan team this year.

Ms. Khamara Cleaves

Ms. Cleaves is thrilled to return to Brooke Mattapan this year as the school's K-8 Dance teacher. She began her career at Brooke supporting scholars as a paraprofessional in 2015. Ms. Cleaves is an alumnus of Brooke Roslindale.

Ms. Alexis Daley

Ms. Daley graduated from the Maryland institute college of art with a concentration on interdisciplinary sculpture. Previously she worked for the Eliot School of Fine Art teaching woodworking, 3-D, and fine arts classes.  

Mr. Kenny Francois

Physical Education Teacher

B.A., University of Massachusetts Amherst
Mr. Francois attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst and studied sociology. After graduation, he completed a corps year with City Year at the Irving Middle School in Roslindale where he worked closely with students to help them succeed throughout the school year and beyond. After completing the Associate Teacher Program, Mr. Francois is a lead teacher on the fourth grade team and looks to inspire and be inspired as a part of the Brooke community.

Ms. Karen Vaughan

Theater Arts Teacher

Ms. Vaughan joined Brooke as a theatre arts teacher at Brooke Mattapan in 2019. Before coming to Brooke, Ms. Vaughan taught theatre with arts programs around the Boston area. She has also taught theatre with schools and arts programs in Georgia, Minnesota, and Hong Kong.

Ms. Jalyn Evans

Ms. Evans joined Brooke in August 2019, as an Associate Teacher. Before coming to Brooke, she taught ninth grade English in the Cambridge Public Schools District.

Ms. Darragh McLaughlin

Associate Teacher

B.A., University of Rhode Island
Ms. McLaughlin studied Elementary Education and Sociology at the University of Rhode Island where she student-taught in grades one, three, and five, as well as volunteered with the Best Buddies organization at URI. From her experiences, Ms. McLaughlin was inspired to pursue a career in teaching with a passion for classroom inclusion. After a transformative summer working as a Teaching Fellow with Generation Teach in Providence, Rhode Island, Ms. McLaughlin is excited to further develop her skills as an effective teacher through Brooke's Associate Teacher Program.

Ms. Adrianna Rivers

Adrianna Rivers joined Brooke in 2019, as an Associate Teacher at Brooke Mattapan. Before coming to Brooke, Ms. Rivers attended Smith College where she studied Environmental Science and Nursing. At Smith she was apart of many organizations including the Black Student Alliance and House Council. She also was the manager at her school's Campus Center.

Mr. Raymond Tejeda

Raymond Tejeda joined Brooke in 2019 as a fifth grade Associate Teacher. Mr. Tejeda is a Brooke Charter Schools alum.

Ms. Fatou Touray

Associate Teacher

B.A., University of Rhode Island
Ms. Touray graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 2015 with a major in Political Science, Africana Studies and Communication. After graduation, Ms Touray relocated to Georgia to serve in AmeriCorps' Atlanta, teaching first grade literacy comprehension before transitioning to working in a Montessori school. Ms. Touray is excited to join the Brooke Mattapan team with hopes to provide an enriching and quality education to our Black and Brown scholars!

Ms. Rochelle Goldin

Occupational Therapist

B.S., Eastern Michigan University; M.B.A., Boston University.
Prior to joining Brooke, Ms. Goldin had experience providing occupational therapy services in a various children's hospitals and school settings. At Brooke Mattapan, Ms. Goldin provides individual and small group occupational therapy support.

Lexie Ladd joined Brooke in 2015 as the second grade Associate Teacher at Brooke Mattapan. Ms. Ladd then taught third grade and is now a Student Support Coordinator, working with grades four and five. Before coming to Brooke, Ms. Ladd worked at KIPP Philadelphia Elementary Academy working on the fourth grade team, with a focus on the Wilson Reading Program.

Ms. Abigail Moldover

Abigail Moldover joined Brooke in 2016 as a Student Support Coordinator at Brooke Mattapan. Before coming to Brooke, Abigail worked as an Expressive Arts Therapist in New York City before switching careers to education. She worked as a teaching assistant in Tenafly, New Jersey, and then spent three years as a classroom teacher in the South Bronx.

Aimee Nitolo joined Brooke in 2015 as the ELL Coordinator at Brooke Mattapan. Before coming to Brooke, Ms. Nitolo had worked in education for 12 years including as an AmeriCorps VISTA for ReadBoston, a preschool teacher at South End Head Start, a Bilingual Liaison for Beaufort County School District in South Carolina, and a Spanish teacher in Sacramento, California.

Mr. Kristian Dodson

Paraprofessional

Mr. Dodson was born and raised in the city of Boston. He is an active community member in the city, coaching in many different areas. Dodson joined the Brooke Community in 2017 as a volunteer for the boys’ basketball team. He loved the Brooke community so much he joined became a paraprofessional while continuing to coach basketball and flag football. Mr. Dodson is passionate about helping students in our community be successful

Ms. Ortiz joined the Brooke Mattapan team in 2017 as a School Culture Aide. Prior to joining our team, Ms. Ortiz was a bus monitor for BPS Transportation and a Brooke parent! Her son joined our school in 2011 when Brooke Mattapan first opened and she has been part of our community since then.

Ms. Abby Ricci

Speech Language Pathologist

B.S., Syracuse University; M.S., Southern Connecticut State University
Abby Ricci joined Brooke in 2017 as a Speech-Language Pathologist on the Brooke Charter Schools network team. Before coming to Brooke, Ms. Ricci had spent her time working as a speech-language pathology graduate student clinician in both school and clinical settings. Ms. Ricci has also served as a graduate teaching assistant and home-based therapy service provider.
