Our Mission and History
Edward W. Brooke Charter School (EWBCS), a tuition-free, K-8 public
charter school, opened in 2002 with the mission of providing quality
college preparatory education to Boston's underserved youths.
Named after Senator Edward W. Brooke, the first African American
elected to the U.S. Senate and the first and only black senator from
Massachusetts, the school is committed to preparing each student for
success in college and beyond.
Although we initially opened as a middle school to an
inaugural class of 88 5th grade students, our school leaders made the
decision to add an elementary component to our school as a way of
laying an even stronger academic foundation. August 2006 marked
the beginning of our elementary program, with the acceptance of new
kindergarten and 1st grade students. We now operate as a
full middle school with students in grades 5 to 8, and as an expanding
elementary school, with the goal of becoming a fully integrated K-8
school by the year 2009.
In just the last several years, EWBCS students have
become some of the highest performing in the city, with students at all
grade levels performing well above both city and state averages on the MCAS.
From the first day of school to the last, we encourage
our students to have focus and integrity, to respect themselves and
others, to have confidence in their abilities, and teach them the value
of teamwork to achieve their personal and academic goals.
These values guide the work our teachers and staff do everyday at
Edward W. Brooke Charter School. Here we hold the same high
expectations for all students, and we work hard to ensure that no
student falls through the cracks.
