Evidence of Success
2008 MCAS Results
A Story of Improving
Instruction
We
believe that our
outstanding 2008 scores are the result of the work our teachers have
done to
steadily improve instruction at EWBCS. Therefore,
as proud as we are of the fact that EWBCS
students
achieved
at a higher level than ever before in 2008, we are prouder still of the
improvement that our teachers and students have made together in the
last five years , particularly in grades 5 through 7, as we have
focused on improving our instruction school-wide. As
we continue that work, we expect our scores to continue to improve, and
we hold ourselves
accountable for further and significant improvement.

6th Grade
Overview
EWBCS
6th graders made us
the highest scoring Boston
school on the 2008 MCAS in both math and ELA!
Our
6th grade math scores placed us as the 8th
ranking
district in the state, ahead of Wellesley,
Weston, Lexington, Brookline, and Dover-Sherborn.

7th Grade
Overview
EWBCS
7th graders made us the highest scoring non-exam school in Boston in math
and the #2 ranking non-exam
school in ELA in 2008!
Our
7th grade math scores ranked 21st in the state
among all
districts, ahead of Newton, Brookline,
and Wellesley.
Our
7th grade ELA scores ranked 23rd in the state
among all
districts, ahead of Brookline, Winchester,
and Newton.

8th Grade
Overview
EWBCS
8th
graders made us the #2 ranking non-exam Boston
school in ELA, #3 in science, and #5 in math.
Our
8th grade ELA scores ranked 11th in the state
among all
districts, ahead of Brookline, Weston,
and Lexington.

5th Grade Overview
5th
grade continues to be our entry year for new middle school students and
will
continue to be until our first 4th grade class moves onto 5th
grade in August of 2010. Historically,
only 10-20% of our 5th graders have come to EWBCS having
ever scored
advanced or proficient on an MCAS test, whether it be in 3rd
or 4th
grade math or reading.
Despite
that fact, in one year, EWBCS 5th graders have shown tremendous
progress. EWBCS 5th graders
made us the 9th
ranking Boston school on the math exam
(out of
85), ahead of any other Boston
charter school. EWBCS 5th graders were
the 5th ranking Boston
school on the science exam (out of 85).
