Public lottery for
enrollment will be
held on March 12, 2008.
Application Process
Edward W. Brooke
Charter School, a tuition-free public
charter school
in Boston, admits students through a public and open lottery process.
We welcome applications from all students who are residents of
Massachusetts and who expect to enter Kindergarten
(K2 only), grade 1,
grade 2, grade 3, grade 5, or grade 6 in the fall of the coming
school
year.
The enrollment process concludes in March with a publicly held lottery
to allocate available slots to applicants in Kindergarten and 5th grade
and to allocate waiting list spots for Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd,
5th, and 6th grades.
For the 2008-2009 school year, EWBCS will admit:
- 60 new kindergarten (K2) students
- 48 new 5th grade students
- New kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th grade
students on a space available basis
- No new 7th or 8th grade students
All applications are due in-hand (not post-marked) at the school by the
time and date indicated on the application. Any application
received after that time and date will be held and considered during
the next application process, whenever it is held.
All applicants and their parents/guardians are strongly encouraged to
read the application and accompanying brochure, before completing the
two-page application and signing the statement of expectations.
Eligibility Criteria
Enrollment eligibility in a specific grade is met if:
- the student is a resident of Massachusetts; and
- the student has signed the application stating that
he or she understands the expectations of the school and agrees to sign
the contract to comply with the student code; and
- the parent/guardian of the applicant has signed the
application stating that he or she understands their family obligations
to the school, including attending mandatory orientation sessions in
May or June; and
- prior to August of the starting school year, the
student is able to demonstrate passing marks in all major academic
subjects (math, English, reading, writing, science, social studies) in
the grade previous to that in which the student is seeking enrollment,
or for kindergarten enrollment, the student will be at least 5 years
old by September 1. Note: Students who are not
able to demonstrate passing marks in all major subject areas for the
previous grade will NOT be denied admission to the school if they
unable to demonstrate proficiency on the school's diagnostic exam,
which students take only after gaining admission to the school.
However, the school does reserve the right to change a students' grade
placement within the school on the basis of the results of the
diagnostic exam.
Applicants who fail to meet the eligibility criteria will be notified
by mail.
