High School Placement Program

Edward W. Brooke Charter School provides counseling and support to students and families in their high school search, application, and placement process.  To fully realize our mission, it is important that our graduates continue their education at high schools with strong college preparatory missions.  The following provides useful internet links and downloadable resources for EWBCS students beginning their high school search.

Summer
  • Research high school options
  • Come back to school having researched at least 3 specific high schools to which you think you may apply

August
  • Parent meetings with Ms. Lockwood to discuss high school options
  • Students begin SSAT and ISEE test preparation
  • Continue to research schools
  • Request information and application materials from schools
September
  • Call Independent / Parochial schools to arrange interviews and tours
  • Review all admissions materials and make note of application requirements, forms, and deadlines
  • 9/9/08 - EWBCS High School Fair (in gymnasium)
  • 9/24/08 - Boston Public Exam Schools ISEE registration deadline
  • 9/30/08 - Students must have all application materials for schools to which they intend to apply
October
  • Interviews / Tours of Independent and Parochial Schools
  • Students participate in mock interview day at EWBCS
  • High school representatives visit EWBCS
  • Register for SSAT Flex Test
  • Register for Catholic School Entrance Exam ($25)
  • Final list of at least 5 schools student is applying to on file and approved by Ms. Lockwood

Boston School Options:  Provides an overview of the different high school options in Boston, and the application process for each.  Very informative and a good place to start your research.

Eye on Education: This website has school profiles for all Boston Public High Schools, as well as a school match quiz that recommends high schools that fit your interests. 

GreatSchools.net: A website to help research schools.  There is also a tool that allows you to compare schools.

Association of Independent Schools of New England (AISNE):  Information about most independent schools in the area.  Lists upcoming open houses and school fairs.

The Essential Guide to Pilot Schools: Overview of pilot schools in Boston.

National Association of Independent Schools  (NAIS): Similar website to AISNE, but includes schools from all over the country.  It also has information on financial aid.

SSAT Student Guide: Tips for preparing for the test and other useful information.
Financial Aid and Scholarship Resources

School and Student Service for Financial Aid (SSS): Financial aid website for Independent Schools.  You can complete your financial aid parent application (PFS) online here.  The PFS for the 2009 school year will be available in the fall.

FACTS Grant and Aid Assessment: This is the financial aid service used by Catholic Schools.  You can create an online profile and complete your application here.

Boston Scholars Program: Program that provides mentoring and financial assistance to students planning to attend a tuition-based high school.

Icahn Scholars Program: For students applying to Choate-Rosemary Hall in Connecticut, this program pays for 4 years of tuition, room and board, travel expenses, books, etc. in addition to mentoring and support.
